Attractive Interaction Between Pulses in a Model for Binary-Mixture Convection
Recent experiments on convection in binary mixtures have shown that the
interaction between localized waves (pulses) can be repulsive as well as {\it
attractive} and depends strongly on the relative {\it orientation} of the
pulses. It is demonstrated that the concentration mode, which is characteristic
of the extended Ginzburg-Landau equations introduced recently, allows a natural

The properties of Msh2-Msh6 ATP binding mutants suggest a signal amplification mechanism in DNA mismatch repair.
DNA mismatch repair (MMR) corrects mispaired DNA bases and small insertion/deletion loops generated by DNA replication errors. After binding a mispair, the eukaryotic mispair recognition complex Msh2-Msh6 binds ATP in both of its nucleotide-binding sites, which induces a conformational change resulting in the formation of an Msh2-Msh6 sliding clamp that releases from the mispair and slides freely along the DNA. However, the roles that Msh2-Msh6 sliding clamps play in MMR remain poorly understood. Here, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we created Msh2 and Msh6 Walker A nucleotide-binding site mutants that have defects in ATP binding in one or both nucleotide-binding sites of the Msh2-Msh6 heterodimer. We found that these mutations cause a complete MMR defect in vivo The mutant Msh2-Msh6 complexes exhibited normal mispair recognition and were proficient at recruiting the MMR endonuclease Mlh1-Pms1 to mispaired DNA. At physiological (2.5 mm) ATP concentration, the mutant complexes displayed modest partial defects in supporting MMR in reconstituted Mlh1-Pms1-independent and Mlh1-Pms1-dependent MMR reactions in vitro and in activation of the Mlh1-Pms1 endonuclease and showed a more severe defect at low (0.1 mm) ATP concentration. In contrast, five of the mutants were completely defective and one was mostly defective for sliding clamp formation at high and low ATP concentrations. These findings suggest that mispair-dependent sliding clamp formation triggers binding of additional Msh2-Msh6 complexes and that further recruitment of additional downstream MMR proteins is required for signal amplification of mispair binding during MMR
Coexisting Pulses in a Model for Binary-Mixture Convection
We address the striking coexistence of localized waves (`pulses') of
different lengths which was observed in recent experiments and full numerical
simulations of binary-mixture convection. Using a set of extended
Ginzburg-Landau equations, we show that this multiplicity finds a natural
explanation in terms of the competition of two distinct, physical localization
mechanisms; one arises from dispersion and the other from a concentration mode.
This competition is absent in the standard Ginzburg-Landau equation. It may

Worm Structure in Modified Swift-Hohenberg Equation for Electroconvection
A theoretical model for studying pattern formation in electroconvection is
proposed in the form of a modified Swift-Hohenberg equation. A localized state
is found in two dimension, in agreement with the experimentally observed
``worm" state. The corresponding one dimensional model is also studied, and a
novel stationary localized state due to nonadiabatic effect is found. The
existence of the 1D localized state is shown to be responsible for the
formation of the two dimensional ``worm" state in our model
Provenance of north Gondwana Cambrian-Ordovician sandstone: U-Pb SHRIMP dating of detrital zircons from Israel and Jordan
A vast sequence of quartz-rich sandstone was deposited over North Africa and Arabia during Early Palaeozoic times, in the aftermath of Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny and the amalgamation of Gondwana. This rock sequence forms a relatively thin sheet (1–3 km thick) that was transported over a very gentle slope and deposited over a huge area. The sense of transport indicates unroofing of Gondwana terranes but the exact provenance of the siliciclastic deposit remains unclear. Detrital zircons from Cambrian arkoses that immediately overlie the Neoproterozoic Arabian–Nubian Shield in Israel and Jordan yielded Neoproterozoic U–Pb ages (900–530 Ma), suggesting derivation from a proximal source such as the Arabian–Nubian Shield. A minor fraction of earliest Neoproterozoic and older age zircons was also detected. Upward in the section, the proportion of old zircons increases and reaches a maximum (40%) in the Ordovician strata of Jordan. The major earliest Neoproterozoic and older age groups detected are 0.95–1.1, 1.8–1.9 and 2.65–2.7 Ga, among which the 0.95–1.1 Ga group is ubiquitous and makes up as much as 27% in the Ordovician of Jordan, indicating it is a prominent component of the detrital zircon age spectra of northeast Gondwana. The pattern of zircon ages obtained in the present work reflects progressive blanketing of the northern Arabian–Nubian Shield by Cambrian–Ordovician sediments and an increasing contribution from a more distal source, possibly south of the Arabian–Nubian Shield. The significant changes in the zircon age signal reflect many hundreds of kilometres of southward migration of the provenance
Convective Fingering of an Autocatalytic Reaction Front
We report experimental observations of the convection-driven fingering
instability of an iodate-arsenous acid chemical reaction front. The front
propagated upward in a vertical slab; the thickness of the slab was varied to
control the degree of instability. We observed the onset and subsequent
nonlinear evolution of the fingers, which were made visible by a {\it p}H
indicator. We measured the spacing of the fingers during their initial stages
and compared this to the wavelength of the fastest growing linear mode
predicted by the stability analysis of Huang {\it et. al.} [{\it Phys. Rev. E},
{\bf 48}, 4378 (1993), and unpublished]. We find agreement with the thickness

Convection in Binary Fluid Mixtures. II. Localized Traveling Waves. (Physical Review E, in press)
Nonlinear, spatially localized structures of traveling convection rolls are
investigated in quantitative detail as a function of Rayleigh number for two
different Soret coupling strengths (separation ratios) with Lewis and Prandtl
numbers characterizing ethanol-water mixtures. A finite-difference method was
used to solve the full hydrodynamic field equations numerically. Structure and
dynamics of these localized traveling waves (LTW) are dominated by the
concentration field. Like in the spatially extended convective states ( cf.
accompanying paper), the Soret-induced concentration variations strongly
influence, via density changes, the buoyancy forces that drive convection. The
spatio-temporal properties of this feed-back mechanism, involving boundary
layers and concentration plumes, show that LTW's are strongly nonlinear states.
Light intensity distributions are determined that can be observed in side-view
shadowgraphs. Detailed analyses of all fields are made using colour-coded
isoplots, among others. In the frame comoving with their drift velocity, LTW's
display a nontrivial spatio-temporal symmetry consisting of time-translation by
half an oscillation period combined with vertical reflection through the
horizontal midplane of the layer. A time-averaged concentration current is
driven by a phase difference between the waves of concentration and vertical
velocity in the bulk of the LTW state. The associated large-scale concentration
redistribution stabilizes the LTW and controls its drift velocity into the
quiescent fluid by generating a buoyancy-reducing concentration "barrier" ahead
of the leading LTW front. The selection of the width of the LTW's is
